Responsibility II: Plan health education
After the initial needs assessments are compiled on a particular health issue, health educators begin planning the actual program; This involves the process of connecting with the stakeholders for input and influence, while also developing a mission statement, goals, and measurable objectives. It often requires creating lesson plans to achieve these goals as well.
I have participated in this planning process through the development of a Sexual Education presentation on HIV/AIDS. With two other students, I researched the history and statistics of HIV/AIDS locally and globally, created a lesson plan and timeline to present a 30 minute power point presentation with activities and evaluation tools in a university classroom setting on the risks and prevention of HIV/AIDS. We also researched and provided local resources where the participants could be tested. Throughout the process, communication with the students' instructor was necessary to arrange a time to meet and to allow for evaluations and follow up.
In planning my senior project, an STI prevention program on the SIUE campus. I wrote the mission statement for our group, and developed the specific goals and objectives with the help of my three team members. Our project included a detailed lesson plan and intervention model.
I have completed multiple exercises pertaining to addressing the barriers that may hinder an intervention from being successful. Some of these exercises were verbal group activities addressing vaccinations, citizens of developing countries receiving westernized medical care, and ineffective health counseling efforts. Other activities focused on the study on various Health Education theories, such as the theory of planned behavior.
