Responsibility III: Implement health education
I have spent a considerable amount of time becoming competent in the third responsibility, Implementing. Through research for various topics such as cyber-bullying, adolescent suicide, Chron's and Colitis disease, childhood obesity, and HIV/AIDS, I was able to collect baseline data to implement appropriate programs for the target populations. Baseline data was also collected during the implementation of some of these projects through pre-tests given directly to the participants at the start of presentations or activities.
I also developed my knowledge and skills in the area of cultural competence and health literacy, through concentrated studies of other countries and regions of the world, as well as many ethnic groups, socioeconomic levels, and age groups within the United States. Some of the cultures that I have studied and presented on are: Ghanian, Tajik, Emrati, adolescent and elderly Americans, and low income urban families in the Palestinian Territories.
Numerous exercises throughout the Community Health Education program were completed concerning age appropriateness for sexuality education and relaying information about childhood obesity. I also completed literacy level tests for health brochures using the SMOG method.
During a health counseling class, and my senior project classes: Program Planning and Implementation, I studied and put into practice several well researched and widely used health theories and models during routine exercises, as well as real life experience administering the STI prevention project. A few of the models that I became most familiar with are the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Stages of Change Model, and Theory of Planned Behavior.
During the planning process my team and I utilized the opportunity to pilot our STI prevention program to a classroom of peers before the official implementation, this helped us tie up any lose ends, get feedback on the presentation, as well as catch errors, and timing issues in the presentation itself. This helped us stick to our timeline of activities during implementation, despite the large turnout of participants.
Below are some examples of the Implementation work I have done:
*My completed academic travel journal from my travel and research abroad (on the history, culture and religion of five Mediterranean countries) is available upon request.
